Facebook and Instagram are launching ad-free subscriptions in most of Europe, excluding the UK, for €9.99 per month.
Meta was fined €390m in January for violating EU data rules regarding ads and consent.
Users can choose to continue using the platforms for free with targeted ads, or pay for the ad-free experience.
Subscribing through iOS or Android will cost an additional €3 per month due to platform fees, which can be avoided by subscribing through the websites.
From March 2024, users will have to pay extra for each additional account, such as personal and business accounts.
Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, has introduced an ad-free Premium+ service for £16 per month, along with a cheaper tier with ads and an option to edit posts.
TikTok is also testing an ad-free monthly subscription for $4.99, but it's unclear if it will be available globally.
The ad-free subscription option is a way for Meta to comply with evolving European regulations while still offering a free, ad-supported internet.
The ad-free subscription option is expected to draw significant attention from users who are tired of seeing ads on their social media feeds.
