Investments among the continent’s carriers have begun to pay off as African Airlines Revenues and seat numbers hit a record high, a new report by African Airline Association (AFRAA) has shown.

The number of airline seats offered in the region has increased by 12.6 per cent to 16.1 million in March 2024, thanks to new routes and flight frequencies.

For the first time in four years, the industry surpassed pre-COVID-19 monthly figures of 14.3 million, recorded in March 2019.

  • Kenya Airways Cargo introduced a pair of Boeing 737-800 converted freighters two months ago to expand its cargo capacity.
  • Kenya Airways will also resume direct passenger flights between Nairobi and Mogadishu starting 15th February 2024.

Kenya Airways Cargo (KQ Cargo) has expanded its route network to include direct cargo flights between Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Mogadishu in Somalia.

The new route will be served weekly, effective 09th February 2024, and is expected to grow to two (2) weekly frequencies in April 2024. KQ Cargo has partnered with GSA Global Cargo LLC, a global cargo sales and service agent based out of UAE, as the cargo logistics partner to service the route.

Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways PLC (KQ), has signed a Strategic Partnership Framework with South African Airways (SAA), a key milestone towards co-starting a Pan African Airline Group by 2023.

The partnership framework follows the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) that the two airlines signed two months ago to foster the exchange of knowledge, expertise, innovation, digital technologies, and best practice between the two airlines.

The signing of the Strategic Partnership Framework by the two African airlines will see both airlines work together to increase passenger traffic, cargo opportunities, and general trade by taking advantage of strengths in South Africa, Kenya, and Africa.

It is expected that the partnership will improve the financial viability of the two airlines. Customers will also benefit from more competitive price offering for both passenger and cargo segments.
