Kenya has topped sub-Saharan Africa for the highest number of burger orders delivered in the past 12 months. Insights contained in Glovo’s annual report on burger consumption in Kenya show that Kenya saw a 35 per cent increase from May 2023 to April 2024.
This achievement makes Kenya the number one country in Sub-Saharan Africa for the highest number of burger orders delivered, with Nigeria and Uganda following respectively.
It also ranks Kenya second among all African markets in the number of customers with burger orders, just behind Morocco.
In total, 34 tons of burgers were delivered, meaning Kenyans consumed about 34,000 large watermelons! And if stacked, all burgers delivered would reach an astonishing height of 17,535 meters – that’s taller than Mount Everest, which stands at 8,845 meters!

Chicken remains the favorite, responsible for 45 per cent of burgers delivered in the last 12 months, making it the top choice among Kenyans.
Beef burgers come in second place, followed by the highly coveted cheeseburger. Fries, wings, and salad were the top sides added to burger orders. However, Smash burgers are the big trend this year, with growth rates of 444 per cent. Sunday, March 10th recorded the highest burger consumption, with at least one burger delivered every minute.
February saw the highest burger consumption, followed by April and January. The most expensive burger order was placed in Nairobi, costing $205.
Burger Consumption in 2023
Nairobi accounted for 80 per cent of the orders, with Mombasa coming in second place and Ngong-Rongai-Karen in third place. Significant growth was seen in Diani, with a 21,920 per cent increase in burger deliveries, Kikuyu with 1,681 per cent, and Thika with 96 per cent.

In a nation where culinary diversity thrives, burgers have secured their place at the dinner table, with Kenyans showing a marked preference for chicken. The data reveals peak times, favorite days, and the most popular types of burgers enjoyed across the country.
Burgers have become a staple for dinner in Kenya. Over the past 12 months, 32 per cent of all burger orders were placed between 6 and 8 pm, making this the peak time for burger deliveries.
Lunchtime has also seen significant activity, with 27 per cent of burgers ordered from 12 to 2 pm. The single busiest hour is 7 pm when 13 percent of the average daily burger orders are placed.
The insights further show that weekends are the high point for burger consumption. Sundays top the list, with 19 per cent of the average daily burgers delivered on this day.
Fridays and Saturdays follow closely, making weekends (Friday through Sunday) account for a whopping 50 per cent of the weekly burger consumption.

When it comes to the type of burgers Kenyans prefer, chicken burgers are the undisputed champions. In the past year, chicken burgers comprised 45 per cent of all burger deliveries.
Particularly noteworthy is the surge in popularity of fried chicken burgers, which have seen a 64 per cent increase compared to the previous period.
Beef burgers hold the second spot, showing a robust growth rate of 30 per cent over the last 12 months. The iconic cheeseburger remains a strong contender, securing third place with a 16 per cent growth compared to the previous period.
