Trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) opened the week on a positive note as the value of shares traded closed 65.4 per cent higher at Ksh865 million(US$8.6million ), compared to Ksh523 million (US$5.2 million)traded last Friday. The day saw a total of 30.5 million shares moved, up from 18.6 million shares on Friday when the market took a weekend break. The bond market had bonds worth Ksh3 billion transacted.

NSE closes week on a high as all indices go green

NAIROBI, KENYA, JAN 12 — Safaricom shares stirred the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Friday’s trading, invigorating the market to a higher closure of the week compared to last week, as all indices at the bourse gained.

The telco was the week’s main feature with 59 million shares valued at Ksh1.3 billion changing hands at between Ksh21.30 and Ksh24.00;  accounting for 60.11 per cent of the week’s traded value.

This helped the bourse close the week on a high, with 97 million shares valued at Ksh2.2 billion transacted against Ksh1 billion on 44 million shares posted the previous week.

All NSE indices closed the week in the green led by the NSE 20 share which picked up 10.55 points to stand at 2794.43. All Share Index (NASI) ended the week 5.58 points or 4.07 per cent higher to settle at 142.61.The NSE 25 Share index gained 90.78 points or 2.61 to settle at 3564.37.

The banking sector had shares worth Ksh434 million transacted which accounted for 19.46 per cent of the week’s traded value.

 Equity Group Holdings actively moved 6.4 million shares valued at Ksh224 million at between Ksh33.40 and Ksh37.45. KCB Group closed the week 1.20 per cent  lower to Ksh36.90 moving  5 million shares valued at Ksh167 million.

The manufacturing and allied sector had shares worth Ksh297.5 million transacted which represented 13.34 per cent of the week’s traded value.

East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) was the most actively traded counter in this sector during the week with 1.7 million shares valued at Ksh285 million changing hands at between Ksh163.00 and Ksh170.00.

 B.A.T down 6.21 per cent to Ksh680.00 moved 16,000 shares worth Ksh10.8 million.

The energy and petroleum sector had shares worth Ksh110 million transacted which accounted for 4.95 per cent of the week’s traded value. Kenya Power and Lighting saw 15 million shares valued at Ksh61 million changing hands at between Ksh3.95 and Ksh4.20.

 KenolKobil recorded a 10.32 per cent gain to close the week at Ksh20.85 with shares worth Ksh42 million transacted.

The insurance sector had shares worth Ksh22 million transacted which represented 1.00 per cent of the week’s traded value. Jubilee Holdings moved 36,000 shares valued at Ksh15 million at between Ksh400.00 and Ksh420.00 during the week.

The commercial and services sector had shares worth Ksh11.8 million transacted which represented 0.53 per cent of the week’s traded value. Nation Media Group down 1.95 per cent to Ksh63.00 moved 142,000 shares valued at Ksh9 million during the week.

During the week, the bond market was upbeat as the value of transacted bonds more than tripling toKsh9.98 billion compared to Ksh3.9 billion registered the previous week, a 155.9 per cent gain.
