Yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a Sh1 billion budgetary allocation to mitigate miraa growers against the aftereffects of the European ban.
A Bill that categorises miraa as a cash crop, was also signed by the President. He made the announcement at State House, Nairobi accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and leaders from Meru County.
The amended Crops Act means that the crop can now benefit from government budgetary funding. This because The Act obligates the National Government to establish mechanisms for promotion, production, distribution and marketing of miraa as a cash crop.
