All is not gloom for the banking sector in Kenya. As we count our losses, we also have to celebrate our milestones.
The Think Business Banking Awards Kenya was initiated eleven years ago with the objective of awarding performers in order to encourage prudence and stability in the banking sector by recognizing, awarding and celebrating exemplary performance in the sector.
This year’s ceremony was held at Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi on the 29th of April under the theme “Enhancing credit through customer scoring” where diverse people in the banking industry bagged awards in various categories as a pat on the back for a job well done.
“Many of you know the history of bank failures in Kenya, I can hardly remember one bank that was placed under receivership and revived. I think there were Oriental Commercial Bank, (formerly BCCI) and Chase Bank (formerly Western Kenya Bank). You could say Chase Bank has three lives,” said Mr Ochieng Oloo, CEO, Think Business Limited during the 2016 Banking Awards gala.
Diamond Trust Bank emerged top in the ‘Best Bank In Customer Satisfaction’ category beating Equity Bank and Commercial Bank of Africa (CBK) which ranked 1st runners up and 2nd runners up in consequent order.
Barclays bank might have had it’s fair share of turbulence in the year 2015 but they still managed to exhibit exemplary performance in the ‘Corporate Banking’ category with Citibank N A Kenya coming in second and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya ranking third.
“One must be willing to put in more effort than everyone else to be better. I have always believed in working hard to get what I want. Inside me, I knew I wanted to become a CEO of a blue chip company by the time I hit 40. I have now set new targets for myself.” is what Joshua Oigara said to Njoki Chege of Daily Nation when asked to share on his personality and life journey. His words can be well backed by his performance as he took home the “CEO of the year” trophy.
Every sector in a given economy has it’s ups and downs. Some highs really high and some lows, well, look like like rock bottom and the banking sector is no exemption. It is good to give credit where credit is due.
Kudos to Think Business Banking Awards Kenya and all players who worked to make the event a success, to all who took home trophies and awards and of course to all others who are working hard to improve the banking sector in Kenya.
