Safaricom shares slip 1.6% on Thursday as turnover close at Ksh787 million

The Bond Market had bonds worth Ksh643 million transacted.

NAIROBI, KENYA, APR 12 — Telecommunication company-Safaricom shares slipped 1.56 per cent to Ksh31.50 in Thursday’s trading, as the banking sector dominated the Nairobi Securities Exchange counter.

The telco’s has enjoyed high share prices in recent weeks after touching a record high of Ksh30.75 on March 19, giving shareholders the highest returns since listing on the bourse in 2008.

On Thursday, Safaricom had shares worth Ksh142 million transacted representing 18.02 per cent of the day’s traded value.

Equity Group Holdings was the day’s main feature with 4.9 million shares valued at Ksh274 million changing hands at between Ksh55.00 and Ksh56.00 per share.

The day saw turnover rise marginally to Ksh787 million from the previous session’s Ksh752 million. The number of shares traded stood at 17 million against 14.7 million posted yesterday.

The Banking sector had shares worth Ksh371 million transacted which accounted for 47.14 per cent of the day’s traded value. KCB Group down 1.85 per cent to Ksh53.00 moved 680,000 shares valued at Ksh36 million.

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya moved 956,000 shares worth Ksh19 million and closed at Ksh19.90.

The construction and allied had shares worth Ksh174 million traded and accounted for 22.16 per cent of the day’s turnover.

Bamburi Cement had 988,000 shares valued at Ksh174 million changing hands at between Ksh175.00 and Ksh176.00.

The energy and petroleum sector had shares worth Ksh20.6 million traded and accounted for 2.61 per cent of the day’s turnover.

Electricity generator-KenGen unchanged at Ksh8.75 moved 1.1 million shares valued at Ksh10 million. KenolKobil remained steady at Ksh17.70 with shares worth Ksh9 million transacted.

The investment sector had shares worth Ksh7 million traded and accounted for 0.89 per cent of the day’s turnover. Centum traded 157,000 shares valued at Ksh6.9 million at between Ksh43.50 and Ksh44.00.

NSE which trades under investment services closed 2.44 per cent lower to Ksh20.00 moving 281,000 shares valued at Ksh5.6 million.

The manufacturing and allied sector had shares worth Ksh56.4 million transacted which represented 7.16 per cent of the day’s traded value. E.A Breweries moved 220,000 shares valued at Ksh55 million at a fairly stable price of Ksh251.00.

The Bond Market had bonds worth Ksh643 million transacted.
