In order to maintain adequate blood supply in Tanzania, corporates have been called upon to follow Exim Bank’s blood donation initiative.
Tanzania faces acute shortage in the national blood bank, a situation that the bank is seeking to address by investing in a national blood donation drive. this year, the bank has once again marked a nationwide blood donation initiative aiming at encouraging the public to donate blood.
The world, on the 14th of June marked World Blood Donor Day and the bank, seeking to increase its CSR portfolio, spent the day creating awareness on the importance of donating blood.
World Health Organization states that for every 1,000 people in the world, 10 of them need safe blood. however in 2013, in Tanzania, out of 1,000 needy people only two are able to get services, according to the then president of the organization Dr George Nangale. This Mr Nagale said, indicates that Tanzania has not managed to meet standards.
“The aim of the drive was to contribute to the build-up of blood stock and to create awareness on the importance of donating blood, which is directly correlated to Exim Bank’s mantra, Exim at work, today for tomorrow, that not only speaks to the commitment the Bank has in pursuing innovative ways to serve the needs of our customers, but more importantly, how it can drive positive changes in the communities that surrounds it.” A statement from the bank reads.
This is an annual initiative for the bank that aims at collecting blood for the national blood bank under the supervision of the National Blood Transfusion Service [NBTS].
The drive took place in various parts of the country including Arusha, Mbeya, Dodoma and Mwanza) at Exim Bank branches.
Speaking at the blood donation drive, Exim Bank Tanzania Deputy CEO Mr. Jafari Matundu, said this was the 8th year in a row for the bank to donate blood to the national blood bank. “We are proud that as a socially responsible bank, it has become our culture to not only encourage, but also actively participate in strengthening country’s health sector. We believe that by donating blood regularly without fail, we are playing a crucial part in contributing to the emergency preparedness of health services in our country”.
This blood drive is part of Exim Bank Tanzania’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program called Exim Cares.
