Off Grid Electric (OGE), an Arusha based solar company has won the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Prize for its contribution in bringing electricity to the rural parts of Tanzania.
Off Grid Electric is currently installing solar power in over 10,000 new homes and businesses per month. The firm also has branches in San Francisco, California.“Now in its ninth year, the U.A.E.’s international prize recognizes pioneers in the fields of renewable energy and sustainability, and Tanzania is very proud to be the second African country to win in this category,”said Abdullah Ibrahim Ghanem Sultan Al-Suwaidi, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) ambassador to Tanzania .

The Zayed Future Energy Prize is an annual award which recognising and celebrating work that reflects  innovation, long term vision, leadership and impact, in renewable energy and sustainability.

Finalists for the prize were nominated by experts across the globe.

The reward is a top prize of $1.5 million.

In the recent past, major manufacturing and processing firms have been registering increased costs of operation which they attribute to power outages. Perhaps it’s time for the government and other entrepreneurial minds to start thinking about offering an alternative source of power/energy. Off Grid Electric winning this award is definitely a step in the right direction.
