Come Monday 08.18 in 3 days time, Tanzania’s Higher Education Students Loans Board (HESLB) will launch a 3 months crackdown for loan defaulters. The board says it is owed a hefty 285bn/- and plans to get it all back.
The search for defaulters involves a door to door kick down of identified offices where the defaulters are employed. In the hunt, HESLB says the culprits are both the employer and employee.
By Tanzanian law, it is the employers’ responsibility to do a background check before hiring to identify which applicants owe the board. It is then also their responsibility to remit due percentage to the board by the 15th of every month.
According to the HESLB Executive Director Mr. Abdul-Razaq Badru, in the first half of last year, the board collected 85bn/- and plans to collect almost double the amount (130bn/-) by June of this year.
