“Lesedi la Rona” is a Setswana name given to the largest diamond to be ever found in 100 years in Botswana. The name which in English means “our light” was given to this very large piece of diamond.
The 1 111 carat diamond is second in size to Cullian which is on the British crown jewel.
The massive diamond was discovered by Lucara Diamond Corporation. The diamond was officially given the name “Lesedi la Rona” in a naming ceremony that took place on Tuesday.
The naming of the diamond came about after a very competitive naming competition was held, were thousands of emails and text messages were submitted.
Mr . Thembani Moitlhobogi, turn up a winner of the competition, and he is set to receive an award of 25,000 pula. In his entry, Mr Moitlhobogi said that the diamond is the pride and hope of Botswana and is a part of its heritage.
The diamond is a type Ila, some of the world large famous diamonds belong to this type, including the Cullian that is on the British crown jewel.
“Lesedi la Rona” will be taken on a road show, under a very tight security and it will be sold at the middle of this year. The company that discovered the diamond will not polish or cut the diamond before selling it.
