Rwanda eyes golf tourism as next tourism product

Golf is a worldwide sport

Rwanda, Feb 7 – Golf tourism seems to be the next top priority in the government’s list as they seek to improve the sector. Golf is a worldwide sport with great followers who rarely come out publicly to confess their passion for the game. Then, there is tourism, the travel for business or pleasure.

More often than not the sport has been linked with heavyweight businessmen and women who see the sport as a rather lucrative activity to take part in. It could be a gamble with the popularity of the game not being as vocal, and esteemed as almost an ‘in-door’ game by other players.

Kigali Golf Club is the country’s only world class golf course that has been in existence and operational for close to 30 years. It has acted as a regional tourism hub both under domestic and international capacity. It is one of the youngest golf facilities in the world, but has maintained its quality aspect.

A number of private sectors set to take advantage of the tourism hub and make the country a top golf destination. The sport-tourism product has a massive potential not only to grow and bring a pool of investors, golfers and tourists together but its capacity to bring revenue to the government is great.

The hosting of tournaments would be one of the angles that could see golfers sign up for the make competition and take part in the sport. With a handsome reward at the end of the game, it would make the sport more competitive with collaboration with other golfers to offer a larger platform for participants and more investment.

During this period, participants and fans of the game could build networks and connections to better the business sector. Such events bring multiple pools of great minds together, with sharing of ideas, culture and information to benefit one another. On top of this, seminars could come in handy, for a holistic approach at the end of the day.

Sport tourism has a ready-made market that can be harnessed with the right button pushed to take the move. Countries have earned massive revenue from such opportunities. FIFA World Cup has been one of the sporting events that have brought all kind of races together and the host not only marketed their country but harvest revenue for infrastructure.

This could be a great trajectory of interest for the East African country.
