An online forestry platform has been introduced by two firms that aim at increasing the investments in the sector in Tanzania. The organizations have raised concerns over the awareness of the sector and the attention put to it. It is a vital component in providing raw materials for industries driving the industrialization goal of President John Magufuli for the country.
African Forestry Organisation (AF) and Forestry Development Trust (FDT) from Dar es Salaam and Iringa respectively foresee the platform as an umbrella to bring key stakeholders and investors on board. It will assist in communication, updates and insights on how to revive the sector and make it better. The platform will also educate the urban residents on the need of conserving such natural resources and the economic benefits to be reaped in the long-term.
A major objective is to drive investors into the sector. The country understands the need of partnership with foreign investors to invest in different sectors of the economy, and the bountiful harvests accrued to their presence. The ease of doing business in Tanzania catapulted by a conducive business environment and incentives from the Government has seen the state develop and expand over the years.
Both local and international investors will find the platform useful in exchange for ideas and come up with solutions to improve their field. Other than focusing on infrastructure development, which is a top priority for the Government in its latest financial year budget, the need to support forestry in the nation cannot be in any way inferior. Trees have played a crucial role, especially in the agricultural sector, acting as windbreakers and attract rain for the crops.
Forestry investment in Tanzania could increase the quality of raw materials for industries, increasing the competitiveness of the sector domestically and regionally. The platform aims at decreasing investment risk for potential entrepreneurs by offering pieces of training and educational programs. The forum that was introduced this year will include business professionals to link up with the key players and share experience on how to better manage forests and harvest the investment benefits from their labour.
