US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is to visit six nations in Africa this March. However, the countries he will visit are yet to be disclosed.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert is quoted as saying that the details of Mr. Tillerson’s trip are yet to be finalized.
The announcement was made at the start of the week by US President Donald Trump via a letter to African Heads of State meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 30th AU Summit.
The visit is Secretary Tillerson’s very first to the continent and the visit has stirred up a buzz. There is an array of concerns over Trump’s administration ranging from fears of impending cuts in US foreign aid to expected reduction of US contribution to UN peacekeeping missions such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other parts of the continent.
The rough waters do not end there, Trump is not exactly Africa’s favourite US President. Not after he recently referred to the continent as shit hole countries. Since then, the comment has been denied with media reporting that President Trump said he used different language.
