Six years ago, former personal assistant to the managing director at CarTrack Company, set out to start an online supermarket in Kenya.
This was at the time one of the first online platforms to be started in the country. Dubbed Epepea, the platform founded by Ms Winfred Gacheri now deals with selling of household goods and groceries online. The firm now prides itself in fulfilling an order in record 3 hours from the time the payment is confirmed as long as it’s within its working hours.
“We understand the urgency when you order for groceries and personal items and foodstuffs, you cannot wait for 24hours.”
The firm has also partnered with various supermarkets countrywide to enable it deliver shopping within the shortest time possible.
“Epepea was created as an online shopping service for busy and fun-loving Kenyans, to engage and shop easily, coping with their busy schedules. We embrace technology to make shopping an easy task, by offering a platform for all Kenyans to shop at their own comfort and have us do the deliveries to them. Wherever one is in the world, they can easily shop and feed their family at home, in Kenya. We are open every day, making shopping accessible 365 days 24/7 hours per week.” Said Ms Gacheri.
For delivery, the clients are charged at a flat rate of Sh300 ($3) regardless of the destination. This is because the platform has formed partnerships with local supermarkets from across the country to minimise their transportation costs.
The inspiration behind this platform according to the founder came from her realization that we really do not get any value from walking into a supermarket.
“If anything, it could lead to impulse buying,” she adds.
Epepea is currently among the top three best retailing online shops across the country, along with Jumia and Masoko. Epepea has established a platform for all categories of people to have a fair shopping experience by providing an easier means of shopping, inclusive of deliveries.
“We have tapped into Kenya’s online shopping scene by reaching people from the farthest corners of the country and working together with other Kenyans within the diaspora regions such as the UK, Australia and Germany shopping for their families back at home using Epepea’s platform.” She says.
The platform is a one stop shop for all best brands in the market working together with various vendors to offer all services under one roof, bringing a relaxing experience while shopping.
“We provide a user-friendly environment on our website, where our customers easily interact with us. We attract a huge traffic each day to our site, leading to a minimum of 25 purchases from different customers. Engagement with our customers and vendors has seen us rise to the top of the local online shopping scene.” Says Ms Gacheri.
To shop, a client is expected to open an online account, giving the required details to create a profile. As one buys, the total amount of the purchase is adjusted on the website with the charges including taxes.
She has also programmed her website so she is notified whenever someone is shopping on the platform.
A visit to the website shows a range of categories from new life home trust donation, gift ideas and hampers, big saver 1001 – epepea, vendor category, grocery chicken & meat, wholesale – the deal, wines and liquor among others.
