Why some Kenyans could not surf, make or receive calls today

Safaricom subscribers in some sections of the country have been hit by a major outage of the telecommunication’s voice and data services.

For the better part of Sunday, the subscribers could not make calls or access internet services on the network.

Kenyans thus took to social media raising alarm over the outage and asking for explanations for the inconvenience.

“Is there a problem with your data? @Safaricom_Care. I purchased 1GB data this morning but have not been able to use internet.” Jerry Rawlings @RawlingsOtieno said on twitter.

“Goodmorning @Safaricom_Care, are you having network issues? I can’t withdraw money via MPESA.” Duncan Makori tweeted.

“Oya @Safaricom_Care now that there was an internet outage for a couple of hours are you going to extend the validity of our bundles by the same hours?” Kianangih said, Pauline Njoroge, HSC

‏”The irony of the matter is such. Safaricom is down. Their customer care can’t reply to your tweets because well, they’re using their own net and that’s down too. As people flood their customer care line that too will crash. Magero points out.

The telecommunications firm has come out to explain the cause of the outage blaming multiple fibre link cuts.

“We wish to apologize to our customers and partners that are currently experiencing voice and data outage, caused by multiple fiber link cuts affecting critical transmission equipment.” Safaricom explained.

The firm notes that this has resulted in loss of voice and SMS in coast and Lower Eastern regions as well as general data unavailability across the network affecting serviced operated through the internet.

“We are looking to restore the services as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience caused.” It said.

The firm has now restored its services and has communicated the same to its customers. Saying that all the services are now back.
