Safaricom boosts Nairobi Securities Exchange turnover to Ksh1 billion

Centum touched a 12-month low of Ksh39.00 before rebounding to close the day at Ksh41.00 with shares worth Ksh4.9 million transacted.

KENYA, APR 24 — Turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange rose to Ksh1 billion in Tuesday’s trading up from Ksh600 million on Monday, boosted by high volumes in Safaricom shares’ trading.

The telecommunication company was the day’s main feature with 17 million shares valued at Ksh491 million changing hands at between Ksh28.00 and Ksh29.00. This represented 47.05 per cent of the day’s traded value.

The total number of shares traded stood at 32 million against 19.5 million the previous day.

The banking sector had shares worth Ksh439 million transacted which accounted for 42.09 per cent of the day’s traded value.

KCB Group was the most actively traded counter in this sector with 5.7 million shares valued at Ksh302 million changing hands at between Ksh52.50 and Ksh54.00.

Equity Group Holdings up 1.04 per cent to Ksh48.50 moved 1.9 million shares valued at Ksh95 million. Co-op Bank moved 1 million shares worth Ksh19.7 million and closed at Ksh18.55.

The energy and petroleum sector had shares worth Ksh12.8 million traded and accounted for 1.23 per cent of the day’s turnover.

Kenya Power and Lighting down 1.35 per cent to Ksh7.30 moved 1 million shares valued at Ksh7.6 million. Total Kenya down twenty-five cents to Ksh32.00 moved 132,000 shares worth Ksh4 million.

The insurance sector had shares worth Ksh23.2 million traded and accounted for 2.22 per cent of the day’s turnover. Britam Holdings moved 1.6 million shares valued at Ksh21 million at a fairly stable price of Ksh13.00.

The investment sector had shares worth Ksh4.98 million traded and accounted for 0.48 per cent of the day’s turnover.

Centum touched a 12-month low of Ksh39.00 before rebounding to close the day at Ksh41.00 with shares worth Ksh4.9 million transacted.

Investment services Nairobi Securities Exchange closed 1.25 per cent higher to Ksh20.25 moving 1.3 million shares valued at Ksh25 million.

The manufacturing and allied sector had shares worth Ksh75 million transacted which represented 10.83 per cent  of the day’s traded value. East Africa Breweries had 172,000 shares valued at Ksh43 million transacted at between Ksh251.00 and Ksh252.00.

The Bond Market had bonds worth Ksh2.2 billion transacted.

Nairobi Security Exchange’s top share index-NSE 20 shed some 43.09 points or 1.67 per cent to stand at 2543.59 on Friday, even as volumes rose from the previous trading. The index that tracks blue chip companies at the bourse has been on a downward streak in recent weeks, affecting other indices. NSE market turnover for Friday however stood at Ksh332 million (US$3.2 million) from the previous session’s Ksh179 million (US$1.7 million) as the number of shares traded rose to 12.5 million against 9.9 million posted the previous day. Safaricom was the week’s biggest mover.
