Safaricom boosts NSE turnover in Tuesday’s trading

Turnover rose to Ksh1.2 billion from the previous sessions Ksh287 million (Monday), with the number of shares traded closing at 43 million, against 9.5 million shares posted the previous day.

NAIROBI, KENYA, JAN 30 — The value of shares traded at the Nairobi Securities Exchange rose to above a billion shillings on Tuesday’s trading, boosted by telecommunication company-Safaricom’s increased activities at the bourse.

Turnover rose to Ksh1.2 billion from the previous sessions Ksh287 million (Monday), with the number of shares traded closing at 43 million, against 9.5 million shares posted the previous day.

Safaricom was the day’s main feature with 18 million shares valued at Ksh535 million changing hands at between Ksh29.25 and Ksh30.00, representing 44.21 per cent of the day’s traded value.

The NSE 20 Share Index was however down 11.96 points to stand at 3727.73. All Share Index (NASI) shed 0.12 points to settle at 181.04. The NSE 25 Share Index was down 8.52 points to stand at 4511.76.

The banking sector traded shares worth Ksh414 million and accounted for 34.18 per cent of the day’s traded value.

Barclays bank stirred this sector with 14.7 million shares valued at Ksh154 million, changing hands at between Ksh10.30 and Ksh10.60 per share.

KCB Group shares climbed by 1.70 per cent to Ksh44.75 with shares worth Ksh133 million transacted.

Equity Group Holdings down 1.71 per cent to Ksh43.00 moved 2.6 million shares worth Ksh115 million.

The energy and petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh20 million transacted and represented 1.68 per cent of the day’s traded value.

KenolKobil led the pack with 1.2 million shares valued at Ksh18 million transacted at between Ksh14.75 and Ksh15.00 per share.

In the insurance sector, shares worth Ksh14 million were transacted and represented 1.19 per cent of the day’s traded value.

Britam Holdings moved 455,000 shares valued at Ksh5.9 million at between Ksh13.00 and Ksh13.50. Kenya-Re unchanged at Ksh19.75 moved 258,000 shares worth Ksh 5 million.

The investment sector had shares worth Ksh3 million transacted and represented 0.26 per cent of the day’s traded value.

Centum moved 66,000 shares valued at Ksh3 million at a fairly stable price of Ksh46.00.

The manufacturing and allied sector had shares worth Ksh221 million transacted and represented 18.29 per cent of the day’s traded value.

East Africa Breweries saw 512,000 shares valued at Ksh130 million changing hands at between Ksh252.00 and Ksh254.00.

Tobacco manufacturer B.A.T’s shares gained 2.50 per cent to Ksh779.00 with shares worth Ksh90 million realized.

The bond market was upbeat with bonds worth Ksh3.9 billion transacted compared to Ksh2.6 billion registered the previous session.

Nairobi Security Exchange’s top share index-NSE 20 shed some 43.09 points or 1.67 per cent to stand at 2543.59 on Friday, even as volumes rose from the previous trading. The index that tracks blue chip companies at the bourse has been on a downward streak in recent weeks, affecting other indices. NSE market turnover for Friday however stood at Ksh332 million (US$3.2 million) from the previous session’s Ksh179 million (US$1.7 million) as the number of shares traded rose to 12.5 million against 9.9 million posted the previous day. Safaricom was the week’s biggest mover.
