With tuition rising, most families must rely on a combination of resources to make ends meet.
Income and savings cover more than half of college costs, scholarships and grants a quarter, and student loans the rest.
The Free Application for Federal Student (FAFS) Aid serves this purpose.
To receive aid, students must submit the FAFSA. The 2023-2024 FAFSA filing season begins Oct. 1; the sooner students file, the better.
Some financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis or from programmes with limited funds, Rick Castellano said.
