An insurance fraud expert warns Florida residents whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Ian to beware of frauds
Especially from construction professionals who may beg for insurance benefits for a speedy fix.
Gina Clausen Lozier, a 15-year insurance fraud attorney, advised USA TODAY that homeowners should first file damage claims with their insurers.
"There will be a lot of irresponsible individuals swarming in the region," she predicted. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
How to Spot Insurance Fraud? In exchange for immediate repairs, construction companies persuade homeowners to "sign assignment of benefits."
"They walk into your shoes if you assign perks, and you may not realize what you're giving up," she added.
Claims adjusters assess coverage, legal liability, and settlement payouts. Clausen Lozier stated only an Licensed Public adjuster or lawyer can do it.
