Flights between Libya and Italy have resumed after a nearly decade-long suspension due to a ban by the European Union.

The resumption of flights began with a Medsky Airways flight, offering a twice-weekly direct connection to Rome, Italy.

The European Union had stopped flights operated by Libyan airlines and banned them from entering member states' airspace in 2014 due to intense fighting in Libya.

For the past decade, Libyans had to transit through other cities like Tunis, Istanbul, or Cairo to reach Europe by air.

The resumption of flights aims to make it easier for Libyan citizens to travel to Europe and address the difficulties caused by the long interruption.

The Libyan government is actively working to lift the European ban on Libyan civil aviation.

Medsky Airways, launched in 2022, has somehow circumvented the EU ban, although the details remain unclear.

Italy and Malta are the only European countries that have resumed flights with Libya, with Italy being Libya's former colonial power.

There has been no official comment from the Italian government regarding the resumption of flights.
