Emirati and African women in business to establish joint projects

Women leaders drawn from Africa and United Arab Emirates have called for a new era of active collaboration between female entrepreneurs in the UAE and Africa, highlighting the similarity in synergies between businesswomen in both regions and the importance of drawing on these strengths to create ambitious projects and initiatives.

In a speech delivered by H.E. Dr. Raja Al Gurg, President of Dubai Business Women Council (DBWC) at an event on the sidelines of fifth edition of the Global Business Forum on Africa (GBF Africa 2019), organised by Dubai Chamber under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The world is much more digitally interconnected, compared to the past three decades, and Tanzania has been busy to get its fair share of interconnectedness.

In 2013, there were about 23 million telecom subscribers in Tanzania, surprisingly at the moment, the number is almost close to double, as Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), telecoms statistics show, over 43 million subscribers, with an 81 per cent penetration.

It is important to recognize the contribution of the telecoms sector in Tanzania, to the economy and to the promotion of innovative solutions to community problems. Real Estate developer Superior Homes Kenya is putting up a Sh7 billion ($68.8 million) residential development in Kenya’s coastal town of Kilifi, as it moves to expand its real estate portfolio in the country.

Dubbed ‘Pazuri at Vipingo’, the master-planned site will consist of 372 houses and associated infrastructure and amenities covering more than 100 acres.

The value of intra-trade among East African Community (EAC) states increased to $5.98 billion in 2018 from $5.46 billion in 2017, accounting for a 9.4 per cent growth.

According to the East African Community Trade and Investment Report (2018), all EAC member states except for Burundi recorded growth in trade with their regional counterparts.

Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Kenya’s combined exports to the East African Community and Southern African Development Community regions amounted to $3.1 billion and $1.9 billion in 2018 respectively showed a report prepared by the EAC Secretariat.

Africa needs cumulative investments of $2.6 trillion between 2019 and 2040 to meet the rising energy demand and provide more accessible facilities to citizens as the continent’s population expands report shows.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its Africa Energy Outlook 2019 report, in which it said that Africa is experiencing the fastest progression of urbanisation in the world. While accounting for half of the global increase, the report said that Africa’s overall population is projected to expand by 600 million before 2040.

According to the report, the shifts will drive the continent’s economic growth, infrastructure development and energy demand, which is predicted to rise by 60 per cent.

Kenya and Somalia have agreed to normalise bilateral relations starting with the restoration of the issuance of travel visas on arrival arrangement for citizens of the two nations.

The restoration of the visa on arrival arrangement is aimed at enhancing free and unhindered movement of people and commerce between Kenya and Somalia.

More than 66 per cent of total employment is Sub-Saharan Africa is from the informal sector, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has revealed, the biggest provider of employment in Africa.

Informal economies are typically characterised by low productivity and non-exportable goods and services.

The Infrastructure Consortium for Africa (ICA), the bilateral organisations housed by Africa Development Bank and drawing membership from the G8 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US) has released a new report that shows a significant increase in financial commitments for infrastructural development in Africa.

Among the key findings of the report was an increase in financing commitments across all sectors, with a notable increase in the energy sector, which attracted financing commitments worth $43.8 billion, an all-time high and a 67% increase on the 2015-2017 average. The ICT sector also saw record commitments in 2018 of $7.1 billion, mostly from the private sector.
