MTN starts process to develop 5G technology

MTN has begun the process of developing 5G technology as part of an evolution plan across its operations.

Speaking at a joint C-Band 5G trial launch at the AfricaCom meeting in South Africa, MTN Group chief technology officer, Mr Giovanni Chiarelli said the future (technology) had arrived as the world innovates amid a revolutionised ICT space.

During the C-Band 5G trial launch, MTN signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Huawei Technologies. The MoU will allow the two companies to research and innovate towards developing 5G technology.

“Three years ago, this was unheard of. There was no infrastructure to support 5G. However, with research, we have moved greatly. With this technology, you do not need fibre and more people will be keen to use 5G. The future is here,” Mr Chiarelli said.

Global mobile giant Huawei has unveiled the DigiTruck project, in partnership with Belgium nonprofit organization Close the Gap, to provide digital skills training to rural and remote communities in Kenya. The DigiTruck is Huawei’s latest effort driving their digital inclusion initiative Tech4ALL.

With the rapid development of the global digital economy, the World Bank’s latest report points out that Southern Africa’s demand for digital skills in 2030 is as high as 230 million people, which is in stark contrast to the current prevailing lack of digital skills in Africa.

According to the global technology research and consulting firm’s newly released Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, overall shipments for the quarter totalled 52.2 million units, down from 53.1 million units in Q1 2019. Feature phones accounted for 58.3% of the market, with shipments declining 3.7% QoQ, while smartphone shipments increased 1.0% over the same period to account for 41.7% share.

“Feature phones remain an integral part of the African mobile phone market due to poor network infrastructure across large parts of the continent, particularly in rural areas, and the ease of use of these devices,” says George Mbuthia, a research analyst at IDC. “However, the transition to smartphones is continuing, albeit slowly, and the affordability of feature phones alone was not enough to stop this segment of the market declining in Q2 2019. Smartphones, on the other hand, enjoyed a recovery from the decline in shipments seen in Q1 2019.”

Chinese multinational telecommunications giant Huawei said on Monday that it had partnered with 48 local developers of mobile apps, and was still looking for more, in a drive to promote South African digital talent on its mobile app store.

Huawei Mobile Services was launched in South Africa in June last year. Since then, both the mobile app store Huawei AppGallery and Huawei Themes have become increasingly popular with the local market.

Lu Geng, director of Huawei consumer cloud service for southern Africa region, said 48 developers have recently registered their apps with Huawei following a Developers’ Day where Huawei executives met with South African developers to discuss Huawei’s offering.
