Indiana State’s Women’s basketball season got off to an exciting start on Monday night when they traveled to play Northern Kentucky. The back-and-forth battle needed overtime to decide the winner. In the end, ISU was victorious 85-82.
The Sycamores jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a quick 8 points by guard Bella Finnegan. The sophomore guard made two three-pointers and a jump shot to give Indiana State a 14-6 lead midway through the first quarter.
ISU kept control of the game for the rest of the first half and got a great second quarter from senior guard Kiley Bess. She had 10 second-quarter points to help them stay ahead 35-30 going into halftime.
Northern Kentucky started to chip away at the lead in the third quarter. OR guard Khamari Mitchell-Steen started to get to the basket and the free-throw line.
Mitchell-Steen was 10-13 from the charity stripe and finished the game with 16 points. ISU’s lead had been cut down to one by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, neither team could pull away. With just 21 seconds left, the Sycamores found themselves trailing 75-73. Chelsea Cain, a senior guard, then came in huge as she made a layup to tie the game with just 12 seconds left.
After a Northern Kentucky timeout, Mya Glanton, an ISU senior forward, had a clutch block on defense to send the game into overtime.
