NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission is preparing to deliver an asteroid sample from Bennu to Earth after a 2½-year journey, offering insights into our solar system's origins.
OSIRIS-REx collected the asteroid sample in 2020 and is NASA's first asteroid sample return mission.
The sample will arrive in the Utah desert on September 24, 2023, estimated at about 8.8 ounces (1 cup) of material.
The sample will undergo a fiery atmospheric entry but is protected by a heat shield, with parachutes for a gentle touchdown.
A helicopter will transport the sample to a cleanroom, followed by transport to NASA's Johnson Space Center for analysis.
