Minal Patel, an Indian-origin laboratory owner from Georgia, USA, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for a genetic testing scam.

Patel owned LabSolutions LLC and was involved in defrauding Medicare of USD 463 million over three years.

He conspired with patient brokers, telemedicine companies, and call centers to target Medicare beneficiaries with fake claims about expensive cancer genetic tests.

Patel paid kickbacks and bribes to patient brokers to obtain signed doctors' orders for the tests.

He submitted over USD 463 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare between July 2016 and August 2019.

Medicare paid over USD 187 million for medically unnecessary genetic tests during this period.

Patel personally received more than USD 21 million from Medicare as part of the fraud.

The case was part of Operation Double Helix, an enforcement action against fraudulent genetic cancer testing, led by the Health Care Fraud Strike Force.

Asset forfeiture hearing scheduled for August 25.
