Russia Says It Dispatched 2 Fighter Jets To Intercept Two Drones Over Black Sea

The purpose was to prevent a potential violation of Russia's state border and counter the UAVs conducting electronic reconnaissance.

The drones were identified as an MQ-9 Reaper and a Bayraktar TB2.

The UAVs changed their flight direction and left the reconnaissance areas due to the maneuver.

Tensions in the Black Sea escalated since Russia exited a deal protecting exports from Ukrainian ports in mid-July.

Earlier on the same day, Russia claimed to have destroyed two Ukrainian military boats in the region.

Incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft have increased in the Black Sea and Baltic Sea recently.

A US Reaper drone had collided with a Russian fighter jet in mid-March over the Black Sea, adding to tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Russia had intercepted four US strategic bombers above the Baltic Sea in separate incidents in May.
