An "emergency" occurred during a maneuver by Russia's Luna-25 probe prior to its Moon landing.

The emergency happened while releasing thrust to transfer the probe onto the pre-landing orbit.

Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, stated that the emergency prevented the maneuver from being executed as planned.

Luna-25, Russia's first Moon landing mission in almost 50 years, was successfully placed in the Moon's orbit after launching from Vostochny cosmodrome.

The incident's impact on the scheduled landing on Monday near the lunar south pole's Boguslawsky crater was not specified.

In June, Roscosmos indicated that lunar missions carried a significant risk, with an estimated success probability of around 70%.

The probe's purpose is to collect samples and analyze soil during its expected year-long stay on the Moon.

Cameras on the lander have already captured images of Earth and Moon from space.
