Rwanda has been ranked as the top destination to travel to in Africa 2020 and among the top 30 globally, a report by Travel Lemming which recognizes trending destinations.
The annual awards were published this week on the Travel Lemming site which promotes emerging destinations around the world giving a solution to over-tourism and encouraging travellers to think beyond the traditional “tourist traps.”
Winners were selected after voting by 30 of the most popular travel bloggers in the industry, who collectively have more than 12 million followers on social media.
Among the factors that were listed by voters on why Rwanda was an ideal destination is the country’s growing connectivity through the national carrier RwandAir, safety and conservation efforts.
Rwanda having been named as the safest country in Africa by the economic forum and RwandAir slated to open direct flights from JFK (New York) to Kigali gave the country a boost in the ranking.
Belise Kariza, chief tourism officer of the Rwanda Development Board recognized efforts of sector stakeholders in continuously improving Rwanda as a tourism destination.

“We are honoured to receive this award and be among the top countries to be visited in 2020 as rated by the world’s leading travel bloggers. Visit Rwanda shares this award with the community members, conservationists, tourism operators and hoteliers who contribute every day to making Rwanda a special place to visit,” said Belise Kariza.
According to Travel Lemming site, Rwanda’s tourism scene is most famous as it offers the opportunity to come face-to-face with the world’s most enrapturing creature on one of its mountain gorilla hikes as well as the big five among other things. The website also gave the best time to visit Rwanda.
Rwanda was also featured on Forbes’ list of the 20 best places to visit in 2020 in October.
A month ago, Rwanda’s ‘Visit Rwanda’ tourism brand, won a top award for destination excellence in luxury and experiential travel at the Luxperience Awards 2019 in Sydney, Australia.
