Kenya’s Afya Rekod has partnered with British firm Medi-science International Limited to transform healthcare delivery through improved access to personal health data in Africa and Europe.
On Friday, August 19, 2022, the partners said the deal would give patients an accessible record of their own health history by enabling patients, doctors and hospitals to host health records securely on one platform through a digital application.
Through such partnerships, Afya Rekod said it is decentralising current healthcare systems.
Commenting on the partnership, John Kamara, CEO Afya Rekod said the company’s vision is to put patients at the core of what they do.
“We want families to have access to their medical records virtually and access them any time, in a matter of seconds. The partnership with Medi-science International Limited will allow for a seamless data flow between the patient and doctors.”
He added that the platform allows clinicians to view data and share with other experts, enabling them to make better-informed diagnoses and decisions.
“An efficient proximity between Doctors and patients thereby diminishing long-line waiting times for consultations between physicians and patients; thus more efficiently affording a Patient-Prompt Service without the need for that patient to be at a physical hospital or Healthcare location,” he added.

At the same time, Sunny Ahonsi, CEO Medi-science International Limited said the world’s Healthcare Systems are going through what they would like to call a stage of awakening.
He said that for decades, demographically overloaded Healthcare Systems’ accessibility and effectiveness have been stagnating in their traditional forms of treatments and care for individuals.

The CEO said that in their collaboration with Afya Rekod, the two partners would work on data accessibility to help create insights for better, more targeted, more individualised patient care.

Afya Rekod partners with GE Healthcare
Afya Reko’s deal with Medi-science International Limited comes months after the company announced a collaboration with US-based GE Healthcare to transform care delivery through improved access to personal health data.
In February 2022, Afya Rekod said they would focus on Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, giving patients an accessible record of their health history. The company has a health record management platform built to assist users with better healthcare services.

The access would include radiological images by enabling hospitals and diagnostic centres to host health records securely on one platform through a digital application.
It further enables patients and clinicians to access data and generate clinical, operational, and financial insights that provide a more holistic view of the patient.
“This patient-driven platform puts them at the core of all services. They can capture, store, access and own their health records, which has multiple benefits including reducing the cost of repeating medical tests,” the partners said.
Kamara said their vision is to enable families to access their medical records virtually and access them anytime, in a matter of seconds.
“The partnership with GE will allow for a seamless flow of data from the equipment directly to the app and into patients’ hands. The app will also allow clinicians to view data and share with other experts, enabling them to make better-informed diagnoses and decisions.”
