This years edition of South Sudan Oil & Power (SSOP) summit will underscore a bilateral partnership between continental economic powerhouse South Africa and South Sudan. Scheduled for 14 to16 June in Juba, the 6th edition of the SSOP will include the African Energy and Mining Business Forum. The summit will highlight the collaborative relationship between South Africa and South Sudan.

Focus on petroleum and mining sectors

The African Energy and Mining Business Forum, sponsored by South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), will happen on June 16. Ntokozo Ngcwabe, Deputy Director General of the DMRE, will represent the organization.

The forum will focus on the petroleum, energy, and mining sectors. South Africa aims to enhance its trade and business ties with South Sudan. This enhanced collaboration will boost investment, and the formulation of policies to shape long-term economic prosperity and competitiveness.

Ngcwabe will also deliver a speech during the opening session of the summit on June 15. Additionally, he will participate in the South Sudan-South Africa Investor Lunch on June 16 at the Radisson Blu’s Rooftop Restaurant.

The Investor Lunch is also sponsored by the DMRE. It will feature a presentation by Lemogang Pitsoe. Pitsoe is the CEO of South Africa’s state-owned mining company, the African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation (AEMFC). The event aims to promote enduring energy strategies while reinforcing the fraternal relations between South Africa and South Sudan.

Demonstrating the ongoing collaboration between the nations, South Africa’s Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF), a state-owned energy finance corporation, has initiated a Joint Venture (JV) partnership with South Sudan’s National Oil Company, Nilepet. Together, they established the Nile Orange Energy Project. The project aims aiming to develop and promote crude oil export infrastructure in South Sudan.

Energy development in East and Southern Africa

As part of the summit’s agenda, Godfrey Moagi, CEO of the SFF, will participate in a back-to-back presentation session on June 15. He will present alongside Bernard A. Makeny, CEO and Managing Director of Nilepet. Moagi is expected to discuss innovative energy development solutions in East and Southern Africa.

Additionally, KB Triveli, Chief Geologist of the SFF, will take part in a panel discussion titled “African Producers: The Evolving Onshore E&P Environment in Africa and the Middle East.” Triveli will provide the latest updates on South Sudan’s upstream and midstream capacity building strategies.

Moreover, the African Energy and Mining Business Forum will feature presentations from representatives of South Africa’s Councils for Geoscience and Mineral Technology, Nilepet, Centurion Law Group (a pan-African legal and business advisory group), and the AEMFC.

These presentations will explore the partnerships driving investment in African resources. Moreover, the Business Forum and Investor Lunch at the summit will offer opportunities for participants to forge new business relationships. The Council for Geoscience of South Africa and the AEMFC are particularly poised to foster collaboration and cooperation with South Sudane companies.

Esteemed leaders from both the public and private sectors in the field of resources across East and Southern Africa will come together to examine how these regions can work more closely to promote the future of mining in Africa and its impact on the energy sector.

Energy opportunities in South Sudan

The SSOP 2023 summit is themed ‘The Engine of East African Growth’. The upcoming summit will reinforce South Sudan’s pivotal role in fostering energy cooperation across the region. The summit is organized by Energy Capital & Power in official partnership with South Sudan’s Ministry of Petroleum. The conference and exhibition presents an ideal platform for investors to explore and engage with diverse opportunities in the upstream, midstream, mining, power generation, distribution, services, and infrastructure sectors. Moreover, the SSOP offers a chance to strike lucrative deals and forge industry partnerships.

Matiok Santino Akuei, Director General of Finance, Services, and Administration at Nilepet, South Sudan’s national oil and gas company, will participate in this year’s finance panel. Akuei will discuss regional expansion opportunities, capital-raising strategies. This is in collaboration with esteemed institutions such as the IFC, Kush Bank, AEICORP, the Trade and Development Bank, Stanbic Bank, and Afrexim.

Gbite Falade, CEO and Managing Director of Niger Delta Exploration & Production (NDEP), an oil and gas investment company, will showcase NDEP’s unwavering commitment to technical advancements and oilfield innovations in East Africa.

Through their enduring partnership with South Sudan, NDEP has successfully optimized crude oil production. Furthermore, the parnership has facilitated the commercialization of gas through the implementation of gas production, processing, distribution, and sales projects. Consequently, the net crude oil production volume has significantly increased.

Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy will represent the Egyptian Embassy in South Sudan at the SSOP 2023 summit. That presence strengthens the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Consequently, the relationship will foster cooperation in the oil, gas, and infrastructure sectors.

Engagement with international energy leaders

Ayed S Al-Qahtani, Director of the Research Division for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), will contribute as a speaker. The contribution will focus on facilitating engagement with international energy leaders. Moreover, his involvement enhances regional cooperation. Moreover, it promotes cross-border fuel security and stability while encouraging investments in the mid- and downstream sectors.

Laila Bastati, Managing Director of Energy Capital and Power, expressed her excitement about the upcoming event. She highlighted South Sudan’s transition into a new phase of growth and development.

SSOP 2023 serves as a crucial link connecting South Sudan with regional and global stakeholders. Opportunity re-evaluation in South Sudan by global partners including the US, UK, China, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Norway, Egypt, and Turkey boosts this connection.
