How to File nil returns in Kenya

A nil income tax return is filed to show the Income Tax Department that you fall below the taxable income and therefore did not pay taxes during the year, according to ClearTax.

According to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) by the end of June 2019, it collected Ksh 1.580 trillion as opposed to the targeted Ksh 1.435 trillion projected by the Treasury.

How to file nil returns in Kenya

  1. Log in to iTax

Visit https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal. On the left, you will see an empty tab, enter your KRA pin or your ID and click on continue.

Enter your password and a key to answer the Security Stamp question. In case you have forgotten your password click on the forgotten password and follow the steps to reset it.

 

  1. Select File Nil Returns

After login in successfully, you will be redirected to a page with a red menu at the top. Click on the Returns icons to which a drop-down menu will appear, select the File Nil returns option. You will be required to fill in some information such as

Type: Self

Taxpayer Pin: Your Pin

Tax Obligation: Income tax Resident, then click on next.

  1. Select Income tax

You will be redirected to a new page where you will have to provide your ID number, Wife Pin (leave blank if not married), Return period dates which in this case in 2019 will be 01/01/2019 to 31/12/2019 (it is automated, once you click on the calendar on your right). After you’re done press on submit button.

An e return acknowledgement receipt KRA will be generated on the platform if your filling was successful. Click on the download Return Receipt and you are good to go. The process only takes a few minutes.

KRA tax return deadline is normally on the 30th of June every year, therefore ensure you file before June every year.

KRA penalty fees

In the past, KRA used to fine Ksh 1000 for failure to file returns which it reviewed to ksh 10,000.
