Dan “Jungleman” Cates in Africa
I know nothing about poker but I know Daniel Cates.
Dan Cates is a well-known name in the world of high-stakes poker well known as Dan “Jungleman” Cates and he is an ace in the game.
When Dan Cates found poker in high school, he jumped right in and started playing online. Because of his success in high stakes poker, the man known as “jungleman12” dropped out of college. It’s estimated that he has earned more money in high-stakes online cash games than any other player.
But, this is not the story.
Dan Cates is venturing into Africa not as a tourist but as an investor in doing good through his Dan Cates Foundation which was founded in 2020 and is a registered non-profit based in Ghana. The Dan Cates Foundation’s goal is to assist construct a world where everyone’s basic needs are addressed.
The foundation works with charities that already do good work and connect with their ideals, giving basic necessities like food, water, and clothing as well as educational resources and empowerment programmes for both women and girls.
Dan Cates is coming to Africa on the premise of seeing games working for Africa. He set up his Foundation to address the repercussions of the global pandemic which would have a particular impact on Africa. Because of Dan’s conviction in a unified planet, he created it as a way of encouraging people to work together for the betterment of everyone. First and foremost, he believes that everyone should have access to food, water and shelter.
Finally, he advocates for the environment to be safe for everyone and he intends to use his position to incrementally improve the world.
The Dan Cates Foundation is working with Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, the CGE LAB, the Seed Project, Reach Out Gambia, KJM Foundation, Football for Peace and The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana.
Dan Cates partnership plan in East Africa
Dan says that money goes further in Africa and that is why he is investing in organisations on the continent.
Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is an orphanage in Daloa City, Côte d’Ivoire that provides education, shelter, food and a family environment for children. Reach Out Gambia is also an orphanage that in addition offers structured educational programmes for the children.
Statistics show that upwards of 80 million African children are without a safe place to call home, with 16 million of them residing on the streets. Children on the streets are evidence of a major social failure and the violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child by governments.
On the other hand, the CGE LAB teaches students how to design and make clothes in one on one training sessions. The students wear the clothes they create and have knowledge of what goes into designing their favourite apparel.
The SEED PROJECT ensures access to quality education, high-performance sports training, and the leadership tools to make big dreams come true for the youth. The project serves more than 2,000 students every week in Senegal, The Gambia and the United States.
In Ghana, the KJM Foundation provides potable water to schools in remote villages, provides school supplies for underprivileged students and empowers the youth through mentorship programmes.
To bring global social change and serve people and the planet, Football for Peace (FfP) utilizes football’s unique power to achieve its goals.
Dan Cates, is also a global ambassador of The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana. In this role, he helps find donors to pay for more than 50 children to receive open-heart surgery.
When it comes to high-stakes cash games, Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates is known as a crushing high-stakes cash game player who has competed at the highest levels both online and live. He entered the 2021 World Series of Poker with approximately US$9 million in previous event earnings under his belt as a poker player. To add to that, Dan Cates won the $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship nine-game event at the 2021 WSOP, defeating a prestigious field of 63 competitors and earning a first gold bracelet worth US$954,020.
Dan Cates is planning on starting a partnership in the East African region, most probably Tanzania, to continue with his philanthropy which is currently concentrated in West Africa.
Already, Dan Cates has started his foray into the East African region by donating some funds to the CR Hope Foundation which was launched in 2017. The CR Hope foundation founded by Renos Fountoulakis is meant to fight poverty in the community through the provision of quality education to children and youth in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Under the CR Hope Foundation, there is a scheme in Kenya called United For Green that uses agricultural waste to manufacture briquettes. Cameroon is the next country to benefit from the initiative.
Women are taught how to turn biomass into reusable charcoal, which is then used to make organic charcoal. With the Dan Cates Foundation, the empowering of communities in East Africa could have just taken a new turn.
