The appeal of Tanzania’s avocado in key export markets globally is increasing as global demand for the super-fruit grows amid growing number of health conscious consumers. Health benefits of avocado consumption include improving digestion, lowering the risk of depression, and preventing bone loss, experts report and it is this knowledge that is driving global demand.

“Avocado exports from Tanzania have experienced a 74 per cent increase, rising from 15,432 tonnes in 2021 to 26,826 tonnes in 2023,” the latest report from the head of Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), Dr. Jacqueline Mkindi.

The fresh produce market is projected to reach US$40.24 billion by 2026 growing at an annual rate of 10.2 percent and Tanzania is angling for a pie of these billions from its horticulture sector.

These statistics by Global Market Estimates (GME) show that the global horticulture market averages US$20.77 billion in 2021 and is growing rapidly.

However, African countries such as Tanzania, which has enormous agricultural production potential still lag behind and only get to enjoy a small percentage of the over US$30 billion horticulture market.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture has begun cementing its foothold on horticulture activities across Tanzania.

The ministry has just concluded a meeting with horticultural farmers and products exporters, to address taxing and policy drawbacks related to the sub-sector.

The meeting catapulted rather vital issues for the development of the sector, particularly converging Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) players, but also, gave a path to the possibility of ushering a three-year plan that will be associated with a special managing body.

According to the ministry, the meeting attracted vital players from crucial ministries, including—finance and planning, industry and trade, ports authority and farmers.

Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Ministry of Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, stressed that the meeting root agenda was to highlight various challenges affecting the sub-sector and respective measures to address them.
