The medical insurance industry in Kenya is exploding taking advantage of a growing digital sphere to introduce affordable covers. Carepay, the innovative medical insurance company with a presence in Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania is leading this effort with several partnerships aimed at bringing costs down.

The industry is still on the lookout of a replacement for affordable medical cover that will meet the needs of the majority while supplementing the government-provided cover. In 2015, Linda Jamii, a famed medical cover outfit by Safaricom and Britam Kenya collapsed after it was discovered it was not making much business sense to the companies. What followed was a huge uproar with users unable to find an alternative cover.

In this, the industry has been on the lookout for a cover that meets the interests of the underwriter as well as those of the users.

M-TIBA, the health financing technology platform based in Kenya and the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF) have announced a new SMS-based service to help the security agencies identify essential healthcare service workers in the country. They can do this by sending a free SMS with an ID number of the healthcare worker to 20253. They will receive a confirmation message from M-TIBA authenticating the ID – and vehicle registration details, when available.

This will help KHF members, who are providers of gazetted essential services, to carry on with their official …

AAR Insurance Kenya has launched a service that enables customers to manage medical expenses using their mobile phones. The new service replaces a smart card that clients have been using to access treatment at health facilities over the years.

This will be implemented together with CarePay and is a modification of the old M-TIBA. AAR Insurance Kenya Managing Director, Nixon Shigoli, says the mobile platform, allows clients to access their medical benefits via their mobile phones, thus ensuring convenience. The new platform will also help curb fraud by creating transparency of medical expenses for the client, insurer, and provider. It also gives clients control of their benefits while accessing treatment.

CarePay gives people the power to care by connecting health payers, beneficiaries and healthcare providers through its mobile platform. In Kenya M-TIBA is developed and managed by CarePay Limited.
