President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the construction works of the 104-kilometre Mubende-Kakumiro-Kibaale-Kagadi road.
The road which will be constructed at a cost of Shs.484 .8 billion will be fully funded by the Ugandan government through revenue that has been generated internally. China Communication Company will oversee the construction works.
Speaking at Mujuni Catholic Parish grounds in Buyaga County, Kibaale district in Bunyoro Sub-Region last week, where the groundbreaking ceremony took place, President Museveni said that the National Resistance Movement (NRM), after rehabilitating the national economy and widening the tax base, Uganda is now a capable nation than ever before and can fund most of her development programs without seeking for loans or grants from anywhere.
According to the President, movement inherited a failed economy with negligible tax collection (Shs 5 billion) in 1986. He applauded the movement’s efforts to grow Uganda’s economy which now has a tax base of Shs 13,000 billion annually. He observed this success has enabled the country to fund most of the national development priorities.
The head of state reiterated the NRM Government’s commitment to better the transport infrastructure in the country and asked Ugandans to continue supporting the Movement in order to transform Uganda.
He reaffirmed his government’s continued commitment to get rid of corruption in the road sector and said it was the reason he appointed a Commission to probe the sector.
Commending the President and NRM movement, Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Mr. Matia Kasaija, who is also the area Member of Parliament, said the government’s commitment to better transport sector was admirable. He called upon the people of Kibaale district to treat the project as their own and render the contractors all the necessary support.
Additionally, he appealed the youth to take advantage of the project and seek employment. He expressed optimism that the road will greatly contribute to the economic development of the region.
