The Sustainable Blue Economy Conference has kicked off in Nairobi.
The conference is the first global conference on the sustainable blue economy with over 4,000 participants from around the world are coming together to learn how to build a blue economy.
The aim of this conference is to learn how to harnesses the potential of the oceans, seas, lakes and rivers to improve the lives of all, particularly people in developing states, women, youth and Indigenous people.
It also leverages the latest innovations, scientific advances and best practices to build prosperity while conserving our waters for future generations.
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta highlighted Kenya’s commitment to innovative and transformative ways of using and sustaining our oceans, seas, lakes and rivers.
“We have convened at the Blue Economy Conference to commit to innovative and transformative ways of using and sustaining our oceans, seas, lakes and rivers. Unless our environmental riches are protected, there can be no lasting prosperity for any of us.” He said.
The Blue Economy binds us to a common destiny. Oceans are the heart of our planet, they contain 97 percent of the Earth’s water, supply nearly half the oxygen we breathe, absorb over a quarter of the carbon dioxide we produce and regulate the weather and temperature.
“I am convinced that for the sake of the present & future generations, & for the continued viability of our ecosystems, we have to envision a different future and a different model for the blue economy. I pledge to envision that future & do my part to promote it. I pledge to adopt appropriate policies, strategies and mechanisms to harness the blue economy, confront, head-on, the challenge of waste management and plastic pollution, ensure responsible and sustainable fishing, and ensure safety and security in the high seas.” President Kenyatta added.
Kenya and its co-hosts Canada and Japan are hosting for the first global conference on the sustainable blue economy.
The conference will capture concrete commitments and practical actions that can be taken today to help the world transition to the blue economy.
