Power outages in Arusha have resulted in the breakdown of machinery and a general rise in expenditure of process-based industries such as Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) who have to look for other energy alternatives such as diesel so as not to suspend operations. TBL alone has recorded over shs. 3 billion in expenditure between between mid last year and early this year. The management attributes this high figure to unstable power flow which has caused the need for replacement of some machinery that have broken down.
Some have attributed the eratic power supply to increase to consumption while others say short rain are to blame for this problem. Regardless of the various speculations made, one thing is clear, something needs to be done in order to rectify this problem as even the medical industry has complains to register on the same. ” We are spending so much more due to the use of standby generators” said the director of a medical centre in Arusha.
