Tanzania is planning to move from the export of raw cashew nuts to processing in-country and export added value exports of the product. Notably, the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX) has reported that the East African country’s cashew nut prices have more than tripled, growing from several cents per kilogram last harvest to over two dollars this season.

“This is the first time prices have increased to such record high. We welcome this development as the auctions continue,” notes Sharifu Linjenje, a cashew farmer from Newala District in the Mtwara region.

Tanzania’s cashew nuts industry is getting a big boost with the construction of the first Fairtrade plant to add value to the produce within Mtwara region. The industrial park in Mtwara is poised to tap into the region’s massive production to boost the income of millions of farmers.

According to the Cashew Board of Tanzania (CBT), exports of the crop generated a total of $227 million in the 2023/2024 season, a significant increase from the $162 million realized during 2022/2023 period.

The cashew nut season in Tanzania has recently commenced and according to a recent report by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), almost 40 per cent of the nation’s harvested cashew nuts have been exported, over the period of the 2018/2019 season, which means about 90,000 tonnes have been exported.

Per the BoT report, Tanzania cashew stock for the 2018/2019 season is over 225,000 tones, whereas the amount of the respective income garnered has not yet been revealed.

The Ministry of Agriculture has confidence that the sales of cashew nut to go on quite well in this season, taking the new measures put in place to fortify accurate and effective bids and sales over space and time.
