Telecommunications company MTN Uganda has appointed Sylvia Mulinge of Safaricom as its CEO, effective September 1, 2022.

Mulinge currently serves as Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer. She has been at Safaricom for 16 years, where she has served in different capacities. (Zolpidem) These include General Manager Enterprise Business Unit and Director Consumer Business Unit, before assuming the role of Chief Customer Officer in 2018. In July 2021, she took up the role of Chief Consumer Business Officer.

Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority (CMAK) has provided its ‘no objection’ for The MTN Uganda Initial Public Offering (IPO) to be marketed in Kenya, allowing the marketing of the shares to both Professional Investors and Retail Investors following the opening of the offer in Uganda on 11th October 2021.

In a statement, MYN Uganda says the marketing in Kenya will be spearheaded by SBG Securities, and Dyer and Blair, both of whom are licensed market intermediaries in Kenya, working in collaboration with their respective affiliates in Uganda.

The Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) in partnership with MTN Mobile Money Uganda has launched a digital service to facilitate convenient Securities Central Depository (SCD) account opening, using the MTN Mobile Money platform. 

In a statement, the partners said deal is envisaged to simplify the process of opening an SCD account, which is a requirement for individual investors to participate in the securities market.

While launching the digitized SCD account opening service Paul Bwiso, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Securities Exchange noted that the new digital SCD account opening platform will bolster participation of the everyday Ugandan in the country’s stock market.

He added that the move will allow more people to open their SCD accounts remotely and subsequently be able to invest in any of the companies and debt instruments listed on the USE.

MTN Uganda registers a 9.1% increase in net profit

MTN Uganda recorded a 9.1 per cent increase in net profit to about $120.47 million for the first six months of 2020, according to the company’s latest interim results.

According to the report, the strong performance of mobile money, data and digital income attributed to the performance.

MTN Uganda overall revenues grew by 7.6 per cent to about $244.97 million in the six months while data incomes saw a 30 per cent growth from about $34.84 million to about $45.45million.

The company’s mobile money which has been another cash source grew by 6.5 per cent to about $58.25 million as its active mobile money subscribers hit 7.4 million an increase from 7.3 million.

Meanwhile, its Voice revenues grew from about $124.67 million to about $128. 2 million as the company reported a 10 per cent growth in subscriber base to 13.2 million, up from 13 million last year.
