Kenya’s telecommunications giant, Safaricom, has reported a 2.1 percent increase in net profit, reaching $225 million (KES34.2 billion) for the six months ending on September 30. During this period, earnings from the cash transfer service, M-PESA, which constitutes approximately 42 per cent of the total service revenue, saw a 16 per cent surge compared to the same period in the previous year.

Safaricom has registered its first revenue from its Ethiopia operations in its first reporting cycle since the launch of its commercial operations.

Safaricom Ethiopia Service Revenue for the period ended September 30th 2022, was KSh 9.1M, while Total Revenue, including handsets sales, was KSh 98.3 million.

Kenya’s Safaricom M-Pesa —one of Africa’s and East Africa’s largest mobile money service, could be affected by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), as the service provider anticipates its revenue to be hit to almost $51.64 million in the three months from mid-march after it adjusted prices because of the COVID-19 crisis, according to information from Reuters
