NAIROBI, KENYA, NOVEMBER 7 — The use of Smartphones has continued to grow with more than 32% the global population being users of these smart devices.
Over a third of the world’s population was projected to own a Smartphone by 2017, up from 21.6% in 2014. This number is however likely to even be higher as the penetration continues to gain momentum, buoyed by availability and affordability made by increasing number of players.
Western Europe is among the largest markets with about 65% of its total population being users of Smartphone, double the figure in 2012.
In North America, around 64% of the population owns a Smartphone while in Middle East and Africa, Smartphone penetration is estimated at above 14%.
Here are the top 5 Smartphone companies by Worldwide market share, shipment and year-on-year growth.
Samsung commands 20.3% of the global Smartphone market share as per the latest industry data which ranks is as the top company in the world. Quarter three of 2018 data by the International Data Corporation (IDC), IHS Markit and Counterpoint indicate the company had 72.2 million units shipped during the quarter. This is however a drop from 83.3 million units shipped in a similar period with the general Smartphone market recording a 5.9% drop where vendors shipped 355.2 million units, down from 377.8 million units shipped in a similar period last year. Despite the drop, Samsung remains a global leader in the smart devices market. It is also among the top five Smartphone shipment companies by market share.
The Chinese multinational which is a leading provider of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices comes in second. During quarter three of this year (July-September) Huawei shipped 52 million units of Smartphones globally, commanding a 14.6% market share. This was an increase from 39.1 million units shipped during a similar period last year. The company has also increased its market share from 10.4% last year. In china, Huawei is the leading company among the top five Chinese Smartphone shipment companies beating Apple and Samsung. It commands a 23% share which is up from 19 % registered in quarter three of last year with a 13 % year-on-year growth.
Global celebrated brand Apple is number three in shipment volumes. The company which shipped 46.9 million units in quarter three of this year commands a 13.2% market share. The shipped units are an increase from 46.7 million units shipped in a similar period last year. The company has also registered a 0.5% year-on-year growth on market share which stood at 12.4% last year. Among top five China Smartphone shipment market share, Apple comes in fifth with a 9% share, a drop from 10% last year.
Xiaomi comes in fourth on the list with a 9.7% market share. The company shipped 34.3 million units during the third quarter up from 28.3 million shipped in a similar period last year when it commanded 7.5% of the market. This is the biggest year-on-year growth by the top companies which stands at 21.2%. In the China top 5 Smartphone shipment market share, Xiaomi commands 13 per cent of the market. This is a drop from 14% last year with a year-on-year drop of 16%.
Oppo closes the “top 5” list of the world’s leading Smartphone companies with a global market share of 8.4 % in quarter three of this year. The company shipped 29.9 million units between July and September this year. This is however a 2.1 change compared to last year when it shipped 30.6 million units a period when it commanded 8.1% of the market. In China’s top five, Oppo is third with a 21% share where it has tied with Vivo.
