Speaking on the first day of COP27 in Egypt, Dr. Adesina said the funding would strengthen collective efforts to build climate resilience for African countries which are suffering from increasing frequencies of droughts, floods and cyclones that are devastating economies in Africa.

The Glasgow Climate Pact included a commitment from donors to double adaptation finance in 2025 from 2019 levels. Earlier, Sunak announced that the UK will surpass that target and triple adaptation funding from £500 million in 2019 to £1.5 billion in 2025. The funding package provided to AfDB will be part of this commitment.

The Netherlands has also announced that it will contribute to the CAW alongside the UK funding. The Foreign Secretary has called on other countries to contribute over the coming months.

Thousands of young people in Kenya’s Nyanza region will get jobs at the Kisumu Shipyard, which has just been operationalised.

On August 2, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the Kisumu shipyard would also create business opportunities for youths in Kisumu.

Kenyatta said the facility, under the Kenya Shipyards Limited, will also encourage the growth of primary and ancillary manufacturing industries.

He also noted that the Kisumu Shipyard would improve transport and safety in the lake, enhance intermodal transport, and boost fishing, tourism and other economic activities in the Eastern Africa region.

Most Kenyans, 83 per cent, indicated a willingness to increase the amount of money they allocate to savings and investments, but the inability to save due to insufficient funds after fulfilling their obligations that require regular funding and the availability of quick digital loans.

Among their obligations which contribute to Kenyans’ financial strain is supporting their extended family which considerably bites into their savings. 84 per cent of people indicated that they regularly provide some income to their extended family, mostly in case of emergencies, because they feel a sense of obligation to send their extended families money and because their extended family members treat them better when they are sent money.

According to the report, Africa’s urbanization rate will continue to grow among the fastest of the world regions in the coming years as its population grows, which is expected to double by the year 2050.

“We urge policymakers across the continent to enact policies that will encourage urban growth modelled around economic development and poverty eradication,” Dr. Gambo said.
