United Kingdom-Ghana partnership yields £80.3 million

The United Kingdom partnership  with Ghana brought in £80.3 million to build a new major road system, creating jobs and building expertise across Ghana.

A statement issued by the British High Commission in Accra said the partnership aims to build the Tema-Aflao highway agreed between BHM Construction International, a British company and the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

According to the statement, the more than 500 Ghanaians will be employed by the Tema to Aflao project, which forms part of the ECOWAS coastal expressway.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways signed a contract with BHM Construction International and the British High Commission witnessed the signing.

The statement also said that the project would improve Ghana’s transport links whilst creating skilled jobs for local people across the country.

The United Kingdom wants to enter into a trade pact with the East African Community member countries.

The United Kingdom which is into a one-year transition phase after it left the European Union, is keen on having long-term and sustainable trade ties with the EAC region.

During the one-year transition period set to end on December 31, the UK- EAC trade engagement will be under European Union protocol where most regional countries apply to Everything But Arms treaty.
UK High Commissioner to Rwanda, Jo Lomas, said that they are looking to negotiating a trade deal somewhat similar to EAC’s Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.

“We are looking to have a trade deal with the EAC, along the lines of what was agreed upon by the EU. Ultimately, we would like to be negotiating something more ambitious but we are keen not to disrupt trade,” she said.

Barely a month after intercepting a consignment of contrabands and illegal imports at the Port of Mombasa, Kenyan authorities have yet again seized another multi-million shipment by rogue importers in Kenya.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) seized 144 drums of imported Ethanol at the Port of Mombasa, which had been mis-declared as 1,000 bags of cement.

Customs officers have also seized another high end motor-vehicle, a Range Rover Sports suspected to have been stolen from the United Kingdom which had been mis-declared as second hand window frames, doors, folding chairs, stools and wall pictures.
