NBK gets $10 million investment for onward lending

National Bank of Kenya (NBK) has partnered WaterEquity, a global impact investor, for onward lending to public and private water utility companies.

The NBK, WaterEquity partnership will also benefit micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by boosting the KSh 5 Billion NBK Majikonnect programme up to an additional USD 10 million.

Acting NBK Managing Director Peter Kioko reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting last mile connectivity in the water sector through increased access to financing.

Water is a very crucial resource for Tanzania, and it is valid to say Tanzania has a significant supply of water, with almost 126 billion cubic meters of water resources.  This means the East African nation has a huge potential to advance water security to its population of more than 54 million. 

As the world gets integrated via advanced diplomatic relations, modern technology and scientific breakthroughs, vital aspects of life, too, improve from that.  This means Tanzania’s water scientists, digital technology experts and think-tanks get a chance to work with United Kingdom’s Cambridge University scientists to develop robust digital water access products. 

Water scenario in Tanzania 

According to the Ministry of Water, demand for domestic, irrigation and industrial use stands at 40 billion cubic meters per year, and the ministry projects the demand could shoot up to an average of 57 billion cubic meters per year.

Water sector in Tanzania stands to get a huge face-lift, following a move by the Tanzanian government experts to partner with Poland government,seeking to amend the water sector in the country.

On September 20th, Deputy Minister of Water, Juma Aweso who led the meeting along-side Poland government experts in capital city Dodoma, stated that: the meeting sole focus is to explore various areas to for improve , primarily wastewater infrastructures, energy demands, clean water supply, and management.

Tanzania stands at a significant point to harness billions from its water resources, this is due to the huge water potential it has, including it’s decent share of African great lakes: 51 per cent of Lake Victoria and 46 per cent of Lake Tanganyika.
