Mastercard and Amazon Payment Services have entered a multi-year partnership to digitize payment acceptance across key markets in the Middle East and Africa.

The agreement includes Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, South Africa, and the UAE.

Through the partnership, Amazon Payment Services will integrate Mastercard Gateway, a streamlined solution for payment processing, across 40 markets in the region.

This integration will allow merchants to provide faster, more secure transactions and various payment options for customers.

East Africa a global leader of mobile money- report

East Africa is a global leader of mobile money with the highest penetration of mobile money in the world according to a report by the African Union in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development.

The joint report is titled; Africa’s Development Dynamics’ authored by the African Union (AU) in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development.

Mobile money services are provided by telecommunication companies and supported by a network of licensed agents that allows registered users to deposit and withdraw cash in a virtual wallet.

According to data from the report, for every 1,000 adults, the East Africa region has 1,106 registered mobile money accounts compared to  600 for the whole of Africa, 533 and 245 for Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean respectively.

The penetration is higher in the region with most adults subscribers owning one or more mobile money accounts.

Land owners in Tanzania can now channel the payment of their bills via Airtel Tanzania – mobile money platform – Airtel Money.

The partnership was officiated on September 9th, in Tanzania’s capital , Dodoma by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Settlement Development, Hon. William Lukuvi and Airtel Tanzania Corporate Communications and Regulatory Affairs Director, Beatrice Singano.

Airtel Tanzania which holds over 11 million customers which translates to 26 per cent of subscription market share, will be offering seamless utility services on land bills payment to millions of landowners across Tanzania via mobile phones.

Further, the telecommunications firm has been garnering billions from its platform Airtel Money which has more than 4.19 million accounts national wide, equivalent to 18 percent of the market share, revealed by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority, latest statistics.
