Statistically, Uganda appears to have been relatively untouched by the pandemic in terms of infections and deaths but unhappily holds the unenviable world record of being the country that closed its schools for the longest time.

The consequences of this in terms of mental health, teenage pregnancy, child labour and school dropout rates is likely to have a negative effect on my adopted country for many years to come. School closure also emphasised the uncertainty factor.

President Museveni and his Health Minister have recently declared that not even Omicron will delay the reopening of the economy any longer and that Uganda will be fully open for business with the aim of rebuilding the economy from January 2022 onwards.…

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassana’s first state visit to Uganda has signaled the revival of East Africa’s energy arena.

President Samia made her first trip outside Tanzania as head of State on Sunday, April 11, since she took oath of office on March 19 following the death of her predecessor John Pombe Magufuli, who succumbed to heart disease last month.

Samia met her Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and agreed to support and show their commitment to the realisation and implementation of the strategic East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.

The agreement was made on Sunday at the State House in Entebbe during the bilateral talks.

Museveni gets $19.6m beef funding from UK

President Yoweri Museveni got assurance on Uganda’s beef exports to Britain and a commitment of $19.6 million funding at the UK-Africa Investment Summit.

The funding pledge is part of a $419 million UK Aid package for the 21 countries invited to the investment Summit.

The funding is intended to start a new phase of financial sector development (FSD) across Africa, to increase the existing financial sector programmes, set up and scale up new FSDs in high priority markets, including Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and the West African Monetary Union.

The State House of Uganda said that President Museveni held a bilateral meeting at the sidelines of the summit with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
