Kenya has launched a community health initiative supported by the African Union geared to boosting primary health care at the grassroots, targeting under-served populations.

The programme, under the auspices of the African Union (AU) Member States, is known as Resilient and Empowered African Community Health (REACH) and is geared towards increasing Community Health Workers (CHWs) to over two million in the continent by  2029.

Recent History of Kenya’s Stake Taxation

Njuguna Ndungu, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, explained that the financial maneuver focuses on fighting against underage betting among Kenyan students. He also spent a speech on the addictiveness of gaming and betting and their detrimental social consequences on families and, in general, on the country’s youth. This stake tax decision has been controversial for the government, which decided to double the tax rate from 10% to 20% in 2019.

On the other hand, this decision provoked a decrease in tax revenue, partially resulting from a market exit trend. Thus, the National Treasury CS Ukur Yatani reintroduced the tax in 2021. The same year, the government fixed the excise duty at 20% of the income from stakes and betting activities.

  • The hydropower project is worth an estimated US$1.3 billion that will see Ethiopia import 400 Megawatts of power annually.
  • The World Bank approved US$684 million for the power line in 2012- Kenya got US$441 million of the share, and Ethiopia got US$243 million- raising eyebrows why the project has not been completed ten years later.
  • The project started in 2012, but Ethiopia has blamed Kenya for the delays even after several lenders allocated funds for the project.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration has reached a new agreement with Ethiopia to gear up further the purchase of cheap hydropower from Addis Ababa.

The two countries agreed with an Ethiopian delegation, led by Ethiopia’s Minister for Finance, Eyob Tekalign, visiting Nairobi from February 2nd to 4th this year.

On October 14, 2018, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) presided over the launch of a 1U nanosatellite, Kenya’s first space mission. The event took place at Konza Technopolis, a large technology hub planned on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

At the launch, some five Kenyan top universities competed for top position each presenting its own satellite model with the primary payload being a low-resolution camera.

The competition was meant to see which university’s satellite camera would be able to perform remote sensing applications. The project primarily focused on using satellites to provide imagery for crop monitoring to assist in smart agriculture.…

Tanzania target to build giant grain silos in Mombasa. www.theexchange.africa

The Tanzania Cereals and Other produce Board (CPB) reported that the grain stores in Juba and Lubumbashi were already experiencing a vibrant business environment. They also expected the Mombasa facility to outperform the two.

According to the 2019 Statistics, Tanzania exported more than 97,000 tonnes of maize. This factor opened the country to the opportunity of launching its grain surplus scheme with the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT).

SAGCOT was established in 2010 to create a transformed and economically viable agricultural sector in Tanzania that protects food security, enhances environmental sustainability, and improves livelihoods.
