Inflation and high prices are the main factors negatively impacting the businesses of  Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Africa according to the latest data from GeoPoll.

The data dubbed Africa MSME Pulse Survey conducted in partnership with Africa 118 and The African Talent Company indicates that the next biggest impacts include lingering effects of the pandemic, rising exchange rates and political uncertainty. However, in Ethiopia, the tension in Tigray is creating political uncertainty more than any other factor.

EAC Partner States still have a critical role in enabling MSMEs growth to ensure long term sustainability and recovery by promoting programmes that prioritise MSMEs to spur demand for quality finished goods and progressively improve the region’s competitiveness.

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) on Thursday, February 25 launched an Ecommerce Booster Program targeting at least 2000 Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

The program will be realized through funding from the European Union and UK’s Foreign Commonwealth Development Office.

TradeMark East Africa, a leading aid for trade regional body in East Africa will support the program, while the technical support for this program is being provided by Amari Consulting Ltd.

Types of businesses targeted

Businesses with little or no digital presence are being targeted for training and on-boarding to e-commerce platforms to ensure MSMEs can increase and diversify their revenue streams during this period of COVID-19 pandemic.

As Kenya’s SME sector grows through a tough economic time, mentors are increasingly targeting the sector to offer guidance to small businesses.

The latest entrant is Wylde International which has invested Sh50 million in a one-stop-shop entrepreneurs centre in Nairobi dubbed SNDBX.
