Climate change is no longer a theoretical challenge to be solved by future generations; it is a reality that communities across Africa are already experiencing in the form of higher temperatures, droughts, changing rainfall patterns.

Despite contributing the least to global warming and having the lowest greenhouse gas emissions, Africans face exponential collateral damage from climate change, posing systemic risks to its water and food systems, increasing the risk of disease and straining already fragile health systems.

NEW YORK – Africa bears virtually no responsibility for the greenhouse-gas emissions driving the climate crisis. It is not responsible for the conflicts or supply-chain disruptions that have driven global inflation. Nor did it trigger the spread of COVID-19, let alone cause the pandemic’s economic fallout. As the world grapples with the impact of the global recession caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, the impact of the Russia – Ukraine war, the effects of climate change, and other challenges, terrorists and violent extremists, including Da’esh, Al-Qaida, and their affiliates, continue to intensify their activities on the African continent aggravating an already difficult situation.

The response has been, by and large, heavy on the military. Still, countries are increasingly focusing on prevention with a particular focus on addressing the root causes, such as poverty reduction, strengthening institutional capacity to respond to the needs of their populations, and local reconciliation. One issue, in particular, has captured the attention of many experts working to address the root causes of radicalization, which is impunity.  Indeed, the root cause of radicalization, cyclical violence, and the war was a culture of impunity.

Kenya has much of what it takes to become a globally competitive tourist destination. With its modern infrastructure, the country has the capacity to receive many more tourists. The favourable investment climate means any increase in demand would easily trigger new investments in accommodation, attractions, and tourist services.

Demand is, however, the most crucial factor here, and with the current visa regime, Kenya faces an unnecessary barrier that limits the growth potential of a key engine of the country’s economy. 

An easing of visa policies could be implemented in a matter of days and would provide an immediate boost to Kenya’s tourism competitiveness. Bringing back visa-on-arrival would be a major improvement. Visa-free entry for citizens of the main source markets even more so.…
